According to published results from China Guardian and Artron, catalogued as Lot 1622, the Vietnamese naturally formed kinam "agarwood mountain" measures about 14 x 11 x 37 cm and weighs approximately 2,500 grams. Estimated at HK$15-18 million, it sold for HK$15.477 million. The piece passed through the Japanese incense house Shoyeido and the Hong Kong Liang Yi collection before being acquired decades ago in Japan by an established connoisseur. Auction notes describe a supple texture, long fine resin lines, rich resin visible at the incense door, a clean cooling aroma, and a naturally mountainous silhouette combining the appeal of aromatic material with that of a scholar's rock.

Hammering inside the estimate as bidding turns rational

The wider session offered 130 lots spanning ancient seals, bronzes, stone-and-metal scholarly objects, agarwood display pieces and Ming-Qing classical furniture, achieving a total of HK$37.86 million with a 72% sell-through rate and six lots above HK$1 million. Trade commentary noted that the hammer price landed within the presale estimate rather than at a large premium, signalling that buyers of top-grade aromatic material have become more disciplined even as Vietnamese kinam resources approach exhaustion.
